Community College Partnership

Earn a college degree while you work!

The Community College of Philadelphia teamed up with the local union’s Apprentice Training program and formed an educational partnership. This initiative, known as the IBEW Applied Studies Program, was designed to help train electricians and allow them to earn college credit at the same time.

This training partnership is part of a national trend which encourages community colleges to fill a gap that exists in local workforce training.

Here’s the deal…

  • Students can receive 18 credits for their apprenticeship experience.
  • In addition to those 18 credits in which apprentices experience hands-on training in the field, students can also take classes that will account for 44 credits toward an accelerated associate in Applied Science degree.
  • Fields of study include Spanish, English, Management, Math, Business, and the Humanities.
  • Each class accounts for three credits.
  • To ensure a conducive learning environment, class size will be limited to 20 students.

Your family members can benefit too

  • IBEW subsidizes the cost of their apprentices’ education and in addition, all members of the apprentice’s immediate family are eligible to take part in the program.
  • Each course costs $390.
  • Community College of Philadelphia faculty will teach courses at IBEW, located at 1719 Spring Garden Street.
  • Each class section will meet one night per week for four hours over 10 weeks.
